Land Clearing Cost In Minnesota

The cost to clear land in Minnesota depends on what is growing, how big it is, the ground under it, the access and how finished you want it. The only reliable number comes from someone walking your land, which is why our estimates are free and start with a walk.

Why There Is No Honest Price Per Acre

People search for the cost to clear an acre of land because acres are easy to count. The trouble is that two acres in northeast Minnesota can be nothing alike. One is waist high hazel on dry, flat ground beside a road. The other is dense balsam and alder on a wet slope with one narrow way in. Both are an acre. One might take a fraction of the time of the other.

A quote by the acre over the phone has to guess at all of that. If the guess is high, you pay for work you did not need. If it is low, the price climbs once the machine is on site, or corners get cut to make the number work. That is why we price the job, not the acre, and why Calvin walks the land before giving a figure.

What Is Growing: Density and Stem Size

The biggest factor is the vegetation itself. Light brush and young saplings grind down quickly. A mature thicket of alder, willow or hazel is slower because there is more wood packed into every square foot. Stem size matters even more than density. Small stems disappear in one pass. Larger trees take longer to grind, wear the teeth faster and leave more mulch to spread.

Species changes things too. Aspen and balsam are soft and go fast. Hardwoods like oak, maple and ironwood are tougher. Dead standing balsam from budworm, or old blowdown piled up from a storm, adds hidden wood to an acre that looked thin from the road. Every one of those shows up on a walk and none of them shows up on a satellite photo.

The Ground: Slope, Rock and Water

What sits under the brush is the second big cost driver in our part of Minnesota. Flat, firm ground lets the machine work steadily. Steep slopes slow it down, and some are too steep to work safely at all. Rock at the surface is common on the North Shore and the Iron Range. The mulching head has to stay above it, which takes care and wears parts.

Wet ground is the classic Minnesota problem. Clay that drains slowly, alder swamps and low spots that hold water into July can rut under any machine. Often the right answer is to wait for a dry stretch or for the ground to freeze. Winter clearing on frozen ground can be the most efficient way to handle wet land. Our winter land clearing guide covers why.

Access, Size and the Finish You Want

The machine has to get to the work. A wide driveway and an open gate make the start of a job simple. A long walk in through the woods, a narrow gap between buildings, or a lake lot reached only by a steep path all add time. So does distance between separate areas on the same property.

Size matters less than people expect, because a larger job spreads the time spent moving and setting up. The finish matters more. Clearing only the brush under standing trees is a different job from opening a site down to low stubs. Selective work, where we leave the trees you flagged, takes care around each one. Tell us how you want the land to look and what you want to use it for, and the estimate follows that.

What a Clearing Price Usually Leaves Out

With forestry mulching, the brush is gone when the machine leaves. There is no separate charge for burning piles or hauling loads, because there are none. That is often where other methods add up. Pushing brush into piles and then burning or trucking it away is two or three jobs, not one.

Some things fall outside a mulching quote. If stumps have to come out for a foundation or septic, that is a separate trade. Grading, fill and driveway gravel are dirt work. Large timber may need a logger or a tree service first. Permits for shoreland, wetland or burning come from the county or the DNR. Ask Calvin on the walk and he will tell you which pieces belong to someone else.

How to Get a Real Number for Your Land

Start by calling or texting (218) 461-7376. Tell us where the land is, roughly how much you want cleared and what you want to do with it afterward. Photos help. Send a few wide shots that show how thick the brush is, plus one of the way in. That lets us give you a rough idea and decide what to look at first.

Then Calvin walks the land with you. He looks at the growth, the ground, the access and the trees you want kept, and you flag anything that stays. The estimate is free and it is for the job you described. For more on how mulching jobs are priced, read our forestry mulching cost page or see what is included in land clearing.

The Short Version

  • Land clearing cost is set by the growth, the ground, the access and the finish you want.
  • A per acre quote over the phone has to guess, and the guess is often wrong.
  • Wet or rocky ground and large stems take the most time.
  • Mulching has no separate cost for burning or hauling brush.
  • Photos plus a walk with Calvin give you a real number, and the estimate is free.

Quick Answers

How much does it cost to clear an acre of land in Minnesota?

It depends on what is on that acre. Brush density, stem size, slope, rock, wet ground and access all change the time it takes. Two acres side by side can price very differently. Send photos and have Calvin walk it for a free estimate on your land.

Is it less costly to clear land in winter?

Sometimes. Frozen ground lets the machine cross wet areas that would rut in summer, so the work can go more smoothly. On dry, firm sites the season makes less difference. Calvin will tell you if timing would help on your property.

How do I estimate land clearing on my own property?

Walk it and note how thick the brush is, how big the stems are, whether the ground is wet, rocky or steep, and how a machine would get in. Mark the trees you want kept. Then send that and a few photos to us, and Calvin will come out to confirm it.

What is included when you clear land by mulching?

Cutting and grinding the brush, saplings and small trees in the area you choose, and leaving the mulch spread on the ground. There is no pile to burn and nothing to haul away. Stump removal and dirt work are separate trades.
