Overgrown Acreage, Opened Back Up

Most people looking for land clearing near me own a piece of ground they can't use. Maybe the back half of the property grew shut after the last owner quit cutting it. Maybe you bought it knowing it needed work. Alder, willow, hazel and young popple move in fast up here. A few seasons of neglect and you are looking at a green wall.

Our land clearing in Duluth, MN and the surrounding counties is done by mulching, not by dozing and burning. Calvin runs a tracked loader with a mulching head and grinds the growth down where it stands. The topsoil stays put. No windrows of dirt, roots and logs get pushed up along the edge. You end up with open ground and your good trees still on it.

  • Clearing by mulching, not dozing and burning
  • Topsoil stays where it belongs
  • No windrows or slash piles at the edges
  • Clear it all or leave the trees you choose

What To Know About Land Clearing

Clearing by mulching, not by dozer

Old-school land clearing means a dozer shoves everything into a pile. Soil and roots go with it. Then somebody burns the pile or leaves it to rot. That works, but it scars the ground and leaves a mess along the edges. It can also strip topsoil off the very land you were trying to improve. And the pile sits there until someone deals with it.

We clear a different way. The mulching head shreds the brush, saplings and small trees and lays the chips down as it goes. The ground is not scraped or piled up. Roots stay in the soil and keep it from washing. For the full rundown on the method, see our forestry mulching page or the guide on forestry mulching vs land clearing.

What kind of land we open up

The usual call is acreage that has grown in with brush and young trees. Old homesteads. Cutover that came back as a thicket. Property edges nobody has touched in a generation. Low spots full of alder and willow. We also open up wooded parcels where the owner wants room for a cabin, space for a garage or just a view through the trees.

Some jobs are narrower than a full clearing. If the trouble is mostly understory beneath decent timber, that is brush and underbrush clearing. If it used to be pasture, look at field reclamation. Getting ready to build? See lot and site clearing. We work in St. Louis, Lake, Carlton, Pine, Aitkin and Itasca counties. The towns are on our service area page.

What drives the cost of land clearing

No honest contractor can price land clearing over the phone. Two parcels the same size can be far apart in the work they take. How thick the growth is matters most. Stem size comes next. Scattered brush with room between the clumps is quick. Solid young popple you cannot see through is slow going for any machine, and it shows in the estimate.

Ground conditions change things too. Rock, stumps from an old timber sale, wet ground and steep banks all cost time. So does a long run in from the road. So does a long list of hand-picked trees to steer around. Our page on what drives the cost lays it all out. The estimate is free, and Calvin walks the property with you first.

What we need to know before the estimate

Start with where the land is and roughly how much of it you want cleared. Tell us how you get in. Is there a driveway, a field road, or just a gap in the trees? Let us know about wet areas, creeks and anything buried in the brush, like old fence wire, culverts or machinery. Photos sent by text help a lot.

Think about the end use too. Ground for a food plot gets cleared differently than ground for a yard. Decide which trees stay. Flagging tape works well for that. Know where your lines are, because we only clear what is yours. Then call or text (218) 461-7376. We will set a time to walk it together and go over what you want.

Questions

Land Clearing Questions

What is the difference between land clearing and forestry mulching?

Land clearing is the goal. Forestry mulching is one way to get there. Traditional clearing pushes everything into piles with a dozer, then burns or buries it. Mulching grinds the growth in place and leaves the soil alone. We clear by mulching only.

Who do I call to clear land near Duluth?

Call someone who clears the kind of growth you have. For brush, saplings and small trees, that is a forestry mulching outfit like ours. Big timber takes a logger. Not sure which you need? Call or text Calvin at (218) 461-7376 and describe it.

How long does it take to clear land?

It depends on how thick the growth is, what the ground is like and how easy it is to reach. Open brush on firm ground moves along well. Dense saplings on rocky or wet ground take longer. Calvin can tell you more once he has walked it.

Do I need a permit to clear land in Minnesota?

Sometimes. Shoreland, wetland and local zoning rules can limit what you are allowed to clear in Minnesota. Land near a lake, river or wetland gets the most attention. Check with your county zoning office or the DNR before any work starts.

Can you keep certain trees when clearing land?

Yes. Clearing is selective. Mark the trees you want with flagging tape, or point them out when we walk the land. Calvin works the machine around them. Many owners keep the mature pine, oak and birch and clear the brush underneath.
