Get To The Rest Of Your Land

A lot of land in northeast Minnesota goes unused for one reason. The owner can't get to it. The old two-track grew shut. The path to the lake is a tunnel of alder. The back corner might as well belong to somebody else. Trail clearing fixes the access problem first, and everything else on the property gets easier after that.

We cut trails and access lanes with a tracked loader and a mulching head. Calvin follows the route you want and grinds the brush and small trees out of it. The chips stay on the trail as the surface. That gives you an ATV or UTV trail, a walking path, a lane to a cabin site or a way in for the next contractor. No piles line the edges.

What To Know About Trails & Access

Kinds of trails and lanes we cut

Recreation trails are the most common request. Loops for the ATV or side-by-side. A path the grandkids can walk to the creek. A ski or snowshoe route through the woods. We also reopen old woods roads and two-tracks that have closed in with young popple and balsam. If the route is still there under the brush, we can usually follow it.

Access lanes are the other half. That includes a cleared route for a future driveway, a way back to a cabin or shed, and a lane so a well driller or builder can reach a site with their equipment. Hunters ask for stand access and shooting lanes. Owners sorting out their boundaries often pair trail work with fence and property line clearing.

What a mulched trail is like

A mulched trail has a chip surface over the native ground. On firm soil it is solid enough to walk and ride. Brush and small trees are ground off close to the ground, so you are not dodging stubs. Limbs hanging into the trail within reach of the machine get knocked back. The trail edge is a clean wall of woods, not a berm of pushed-up dirt and roots.

Know what it is not. We do not bring in gravel, set culverts, dig ditches or level the ground. A trail across a wet hole will still be wet. Clearing a driveway route gives your gravel contractor an open path to work in. It does not build the driveway. For open areas along the trail, like a turnaround or a campsite, see land clearing.

Winter vs summer trail work

We work all year, and trails are some of the best winter work there is. Frozen ground carries the machine across low spots that would be soft in June. Leaves are off, so it is easier to pick a line and see what is ahead. Snow does not stop the mulching head. A trail cut in January is ready to use when the snow goes.

Summer and fall have their own upside. You can see how the ground drains and where the dry ridges run. Routes on high, firm ground can be cut any time. If your trail has to cross swampy stretches, tell us. That may be a reason to wait for freeze-up. Our guide to winter land clearing in Minnesota has more on working in the cold.

What drives the cost of a trail

Length and width are the obvious ones. A narrow footpath takes less than a lane wide enough for a truck. After that it comes down to what is growing in the way. Light brush growing on an old roadbed goes quick. A new route through thick saplings takes more passes. Rocks, deadfall and sharp side slopes all add time as well.

Getting the machine to the starting point matters too. So does how picky the route is. Winding around every nice tree is slower than a straight shot. We explain all of this on the page about what drives the cost. Calvin walks the route with you before he prices it, and that estimate is free. We cut trails across our whole service area.

Questions

Trails & Access Questions

Can you clear trails in the winter?

Yes. We work through the winter, and Calvin cuts trails and lanes in the snow. Frozen ground is often the best way across low or soft areas. Very deep snow or a hard thaw can shift the schedule.

How wide should an ATV or UTV trail be?

Wide enough for your widest machine with room to spare on both sides, and wider on the corners. A side-by-side needs more than an ATV. If you plan to bring a truck or trailer in, say so on the walk-through.

Can you clear a driveway route to a cabin or building site?

Yes. We clear the vegetation along the route so there is an open lane to work in. We do not bring gravel, dig or shape the roadbed. A driveway contractor does that after us. Check county rules if the route crosses wet ground.

Can you reopen an old woods road that has grown in?

Usually, yes. Old roads and two-tracks fill in with brush, saplings and small trees, and that is what a mulcher handles well. The old roadbed is often still firm underneath. If large trees have come up in it, we will talk through options.

Will there be stumps sticking up in the trail?

The mulching head grinds brush and small trees off close to the ground, so the trail is not left full of tall stubs. Roots stay in the soil. We do not dig stumps out. Chips cover the surface when we finish.
