Forestry MulchingDone In One Pass
Forestry mulching for the Duluth area and northeast Minnesota. One tracked machine grinds brush, saplings and small trees into mulch right where they stand.

One Machine. No Piles Left Behind.
If you searched for forestry mulching near me, you probably have ground that got away from you. Brush is head high. Saplings fill the gaps between the good trees. You can't walk it, let alone drive it. Forestry mulching fixes that with a single machine. A tracked loader carries a mulching head that grinds brush, saplings and small trees into chips on the spot.
CJ Forestry Mulching does this work across the Duluth area and six counties in northeast Minnesota. Calvin owns the business and runs the machine himself. There are no burn piles to tend, no brush piles to look at and nothing trucked away. The mulch stays on the ground. The trees you want to keep stay standing. You get land you can use again.
- One machine does the cutting and the cleanup
- No burn piles, brush piles or haul-off
- Mulch stays down to hold soil and slow regrowth
- The trees you pick stay standing
What To Know About Forestry Mulching
How forestry mulching works
The mulching head is a spinning cutter with steel teeth on the front of a tracked loader. Calvin drives up to the brush and lowers the head onto it. Stems are chewed up and worked into the ground surface. Brush, saplings and small trees go from standing to shredded in one pass. Then the machine moves ahead onto the ground it just cleared.
Nothing gets cut, dragged and stacked. That is the big difference from clearing with a chainsaw crew or a dozer. One operator and one machine handle the whole job, so there is less traffic across your ground. The loader runs on tracks, which spread its weight and help on soft soil. Clearing is selective too. We work around the trees you flag.
What it leaves behind
When we pull out, the ground is covered in a layer of shredded wood. It is not a lawn and it is not bare dirt. It looks like a rough bed of wood chips with your keeper trees standing in it. You can walk across it or take an ATV over it as soon as we are done. There is no second cleanup to schedule.
That mulch does real work. It covers the soil so rain does not wash it downhill. It shades the ground, which slows the brush from coming back. Over time it breaks down and feeds the soil. Roots stay in the ground and help hold a slope together. If you need bare, level dirt for a foundation, that is a separate step for a dirt contractor.
When this is the right method
Forestry mulching fits most jobs where the problem is brush, saplings and small trees. That covers land clearing on overgrown acreage, thinning the underbrush in a stand of good timber, cutting trails and access lanes, and opening up old fence lines. It suits owners who want usable land without a burn permit, a heap of slash or a torn-up yard.
It is not the right tool for everything. Big mature trees are a different job, and we will tell you so when we walk the land. Mulching also does not pull stumps out of the ground or level a site. If that is what you need, we will say it straight. Our service area page lists the six counties we cover.
What changes the price
We do not post rates, because no two pieces of ground are alike. Thickness is the biggest factor. Light brush goes fast. A wall of saplings packed tight takes far longer to grind. The size of the stems matters too, and so does the ground itself. Rocks, steep slopes, wet spots and old junk hidden in the brush all slow the machine down.
Access counts. A site next to the road is simpler than one at the end of a narrow trail. How much you want kept also plays in, since working around marked trees takes more care than clearing everything. Read more about what drives the cost, then call or text (218) 461-7376. Forestry Mulching Questions
What is forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching clears land with one machine. A tracked loader with a mulching head grinds brush, saplings and small trees into mulch where they stand. Nothing is piled, burned or hauled away. Our guide on what forestry mulching is goes deeper.
What are the downsides of forestry mulching?
It leaves wood mulch, not bare dirt, so it is not a finished building pad. Roots stay in the ground. Some brush will sprout again and need upkeep. Large mature trees are outside what it does. We say so up front if a job is a poor fit.
How big of trees can a forestry mulcher handle?
A mulcher is built for brush, saplings and small trees. That is most of what chokes out land around here. Larger trees are a different job. Where the line falls depends on the species and how many there are. Call and describe what you have.
Is forestry mulching worth it?
For most overgrown land, yes. You are paying for one machine and one operator, not a crew, a dozer, trucks and a burn pile to babysit. The ground is usable when we leave. It is less of a fit if you need stumps dug out.
What happens to the mulch after forestry mulching?
It stays where it falls. The shredded wood forms a mat that holds the soil, keeps moisture in and slows new brush from sprouting. You do not have to rake it, burn it or pay to have it taken away.
