Brush Removal Cost In Minnesota

Brush removal cost comes down to how thick the brush is, how big the stems are, what the ground is like, and what happens to the brush once it is cut. Mulching it in place removes the hauling and burning steps, which is often where the extra cost hides.

What Counts as Brush

Brush is the woody growth under and between the trees. In northeast Minnesota that means hazel, alder, willow, dogwood, young aspen and balsam, buckthorn in some places, and the dead stems and windfall mixed in. It grows fast wherever the sun reaches the ground. A yard edge left alone for a few summers can turn into a wall you cannot walk through.

Brush removal is the job of taking that growth out so you can see and use the ground. It might be underbrush beneath a stand of pine you want to keep, a thicket along a driveway, or a whole back lot gone wild. The method you pick decides how the job goes and what it costs. Our brush and underbrush clearing page covers how we handle it.

Density, Stem Size and Species

Thin brush you can see through goes quickly. A solid thicket takes longer, because there is far more wood per square foot to cut and grind. Stem size matters just as much. Saplings vanish in a single pass, while older alder clumps and larger aspen take more time and more passes.

Species play a role. Hazel and young aspen are soft. Buckthorn and ironwood are tough and dense. Dead balsam and old blowdown add wood you do not see at first glance. Brush under trees you want to keep is slower than open brush, because the operator has to work carefully around each trunk. Every one of these is something Calvin looks at on the walk before giving an estimate.

Ground and Access

The ground under the brush changes the work as much as the brush does. Flat, firm soil lets the machine keep moving. Slopes, surface rock and soft wet spots all slow it down. Wet ground may mean waiting for a dry spell or for frost, so the machine does not leave ruts behind.

Access is the other piece. A machine that can drive straight in from the road starts working right away. A yard with a narrow side gate, a lake lot down a steep path, or brush scattered in patches across a property takes more time to reach. Fences, sheds, septic covers and wells in the work area are fine, but they need to be marked so the operator can work around them.

Mulching vs Hauling vs Burning

There are three common ways to deal with brush once it is cut. Hauling means cutting, dragging and loading it, then trucking it to a drop site. Burning means piling it, waiting for a safe and legal day, and tending the fire. Both turn one job into several, and both leave bare or scorched ground where the piles sat.

Mulching does it in one step. The machine grinds the brush where it stands and spreads it as mulch over the soil. Nothing gets dragged, piled, loaded or lit. That is why mulching can come out ahead on total cost even when the hourly work looks similar. Open burning in Minnesota is regulated by the DNR, and restrictions change with fire danger. What You Are Left With

After mulching, the brush is gone and the ground is covered in a layer of chips. You can walk through and see the trees you kept. The stems are cut low, and the roots stay in the soil, which holds it in place on slopes and near water. The mulch shades the ground and slows the next round of sprouts.

It is not a lawn. You will see some short stubs and uneven chips, and the ground keeps its natural bumps. Over the next seasons the mulch breaks down. Some brush will try to come back, which is normal. A follow up pass every few years keeps it open. Our guide on how to clear underbrush explains how to keep it in check.

The Short Version

  • Thickness, stem size and species set most of the cost of brush removal.
  • Slope, rock, wet ground and tight access add time.
  • Hauling and burning add extra steps that mulching skips.
  • Mulching leaves a chip layer that holds soil and slows regrowth.
  • A walk with Calvin and a free estimate gives you the real number.

Quick Answers

How much does it cost to clear an acre of brush?

It depends on how thick the brush is, the size of the stems, the ground and the access. An acre of light hazel is a very different job from an acre of old alder on wet clay. Calvin walks it and gives a free estimate for your land.

What is the fastest way to clear brush?

For anything more than a small patch, a forestry mulcher. It cuts and grinds in one pass, so there is no dragging, piling, loading or burning afterward. When the machine leaves, the job is done.

Where can I get rid of brush in Minnesota?

Many counties and cities run yard waste or brush drop sites, so check with yours for hours and rules. Burning is regulated by the DNR. If you would rather not move it at all, mulching turns it into ground cover right where it grew.

Will brush grow back after it is mulched?

Some will. Roots stay in the ground, and many brush species sprout again. The mulch layer slows that down. A light pass every few years, or regular mowing on open ground, keeps it from closing in again.
