Brush Clearing in Two Harbors, MN

Brush Clearing Around Two Harbors

Brush clearing in Two Harbors looks different than it once did. Spruce budworm has killed balsam fir across Lake County, one of the hardest hit counties in the state. The dead trees stand gray behind homes and cabins, then fall into the alder and young growth below. What used to be a green woods is now a tangle of dry fuel. We mulch that tangle where it lies.

Landowners here are not alone in worrying about it. The Lake Soil and Water Conservation District has worked with owners near Two Harbors to clear dead balsam and protect houses from wildfire. Dead fir has little timber value, so cutting it and treating the debris on site is often the only practical choice. A forestry mulcher does exactly that. Our dead balsam guide covers the background.

Brush in this area also crowds the river valleys. The Stewart River runs down to Two Harbors from the northwest, and owners along it and its feeder creeks deal with alder thick in the low ground. Up Lake County Highway 2, homes on acreage face the same mix of dead fir and brush.

Brush Clearing in Two Harbors: What to Know

Clearing fuel back from the house

A cabin surrounded by dead balsam is a cabin sitting in kindling. Clearing that fuel back from buildings is one of the most useful things a North Shore owner can do. We grind the dead fir, the brush and the low limbs in a ring around the house, garage and sauna, and we keep the healthy trees you choose.

There is no burn pile, which matters in dry weather near the lake wind. Our defensible space guide explains how owners think about the zones around a building.

What the woods look like afterward

Open, walkable ground under a layer of chips. The live spruce, pine, cedar and birch you kept stand with room around them. Dead wood is no longer stacked at chest height. Light reaches the ground again, and new growth of your choosing has a chance.

The mulch protects the soil from washing on slopes. On red clay that matters a lot. It also breaks down over a few seasons, so you never have to clean it up.

Who to call about rules

Lake Superior, the Stewart River and the trout streams that feed the shore all come with shoreland rules. Lake County planning and zoning handles most of those questions, and the Minnesota DNR covers public waters. The Lake SWCD can also talk through forest health on your land. Our Two Harbors page covers the rest of our work in town.

Is dead balsam near my Two Harbors cabin a fire risk?

Dead fir dries out fast and carries fire well, so it is worth dealing with near buildings. The closer it stands to the cabin, the more it matters. We can grind dead balsam and the brush under it on site, with no pile left to dry out. Call or text (218) 461-7376 to set up a walk-through.

Can you clear budworm-killed balsam and keep my live spruce?

Yes. We work selectively. You show us the live spruce, pine, birch and cedar you want kept, and we grind the dead fir and brush around them. The machine is compact and turns tight, so it can work in fairly close quarters.

What do people near Two Harbors do with dead balsam?

Some cut and burn it, which takes time, a permit in many cases and good weather. Some leave it standing until it falls. Many now have it mulched on site. That clears the fuel in one step and leaves the ground covered.

How long does it take to clear dead fir and brush on a North Shore lot?

It depends on how much is down, how thick the brush is, and how steep and rocky the lot is. Fallen fir in a tangle takes longer than standing trees. Calvin walks the lot first and gives you a straight idea of time and a free estimate.
