Aitkin County

Land Clearing Across Aitkin County

Aitkin County is cabin and hunting country first. Lakes are scattered across it, from the north shore of Mille Lacs up through Big Sandy, and between them lie some of the largest peat bogs in this part of the state. The Mississippi wanders through the middle past Palisade and Aitkin. High ground comes in ridges and hills of popple, oak, birch and pine. Forestry mulching in Aitkin County is mostly done on that high ground, on lake lots and on the farm fields of the river valley. See how the method works if you have not watched a mulcher run.

Hunting land is the most common kind of property here. The county is full of forties and eighties bought for deer season, and a lot of them are half swamp. That is fine. We work the dry half in summer and fall, and the wet edges once they freeze. Shooting lanes, stand trails, food plot openings and a decent way in from the road are the usual list. Hunting land clearing covers each of those. Good trails also make a property easier to enjoy the rest of the year.

Lake lots are the second big category. Cabins here go back generations, and many lots have slowly closed in with brush, balsam and leaning popple. Others are being rebuilt as year-round homes and need the site opened. We do lot and site clearing on the upland portion and follow whatever shoreland limits the county sets near the water. Farm fields along the Mississippi round out the work, with willow and alder to push back. Every job starts with a free walk-through. The service area page lists our Aitkin County towns.

Questions

Aitkin County Questions

Do you serve all of Aitkin County, including the north end?

Yes. We cover Aitkin, McGregor, Palisade, Tamarack and McGrath, the Mille Lacs shore around Malmo, and the north end up to Hill City and Jacobson. Some parcels in this county are a long way down a minimum maintenance road. Tell us about the access when you call.

So much of Aitkin County is wetland. What can actually be cleared?

Upland can be cleared in any season. Brushy lowland can often be mulched on frozen ground. True wetlands are protected in Minnesota, and what you may do in them is limited. If you are not sure which you have, the county or the soil and water conservation district can help you find out.

Can you clear a lot for a new cabin in Aitkin County?

Yes, the brush and small-tree part of it. We open the building area, the driveway corridor and room to work, and we save the trees you pick. Large timber, pulling stumps out of the ground and dirt work are outside what we do. Your builder can tell you how much needs to be open.
