Land Clearing Across Lake County

Lake County runs from the Lake Superior shore far back into the border lakes, and most of it is forest. Private land is concentrated along Highway 61, around Two Harbors and Silver Bay, and in pockets inland near Finland and Isabella. The shore is steep and rocky with clay on the benches. Inland it is ridges, spruce swamp and a great many small lakes. Land clearing in Lake County is rarely a big open-field job. It is a cabin site, a driveway, a view, a trail. Selective forestry mulching is well matched to that scale.

On the shore, owners are usually opening a lot they intend to build on or cleaning up one they already use. Balsam, alder and dead birch make up most of what comes out. We do the lot and site clearing and leave spruce, cedar and healthy birch where you want them. Erosion is a real concern on these slopes. Mulching helps because roots stay in the ground and the chips shield the soil from rain. Shoreland and bluff rules along Superior can be strict, so talk to county planning and zoning before picking what to cut.

Inland, the work shifts to camps and recreation. Trails for ATVs, snowmobiles, skis and boots. Yards pushed back from a hunting shack. Lanes through young popple for grouse and deer. Our trails and access and hunting land services cover those. Much of the surrounding land is national forest, state forest or county land, so private boundaries need to be clear before we start. Winter is long here and we keep working through it. Check the service area page to see the towns we list, and call about anywhere between them.

Questions

Lake County Questions

Do you work along the whole North Shore in Lake County?

Yes, from Knife River and Two Harbors up through Castle Danger, Beaver Bay and Silver Bay to Little Marais, and inland to Finland and Isabella. If your land is in Lake County and has road access, we can look at it. Photos and a parcel location help us plan the visit.

Will clearing cause erosion on my steep Lake County lot?

Any clearing on a slope needs care. Forestry mulching is one of the lower-impact ways to do it, since stumps and roots stay in place and mulch covers the soil. We also recommend leaving trees and brush on the steepest parts. For bluff land, get the county's input first.

My land borders national forest. Can you still clear it?

We can clear your side. The boundary has to be located and marked first, because cutting on federal or state land is a serious problem for the owner. If the line is uncertain, hire a surveyor. Once it is flagged we stay well inside it and clear only what you own.
