Land Clearing InSandstone, MN
Kettle River country around Sandstone is rock ledge, pine and thick brush. We clear acreage, hunting land and homesites by mulching.
Clearing Land Around Sandstone
Sandstone is named for the rock it sits on. The Kettle River cuts through it at the edge of town, and Banning State Park follows the river just to the north. Private land around here has the same bones. Shallow soil over flat sandstone in places, sand and gravel in others, and white pine, red pine and oak on top. Land clearing in Sandstone goes well with a mulcher because the head rides over ledge instead of catching on it. Brush, saplings and small trees become chips. The rock stays put. Our main land clearing page has the basics.
The country east and north, out toward Askov, Bruno and Finlayson, is a mix of small farms and big blocks of woods. Many parcels were bought as hunting land or as a place to put a cabin someday. When someday comes, the first step is getting in. We open the approach, clear a camp or building site and cut a trail to the back. For the building spot, see lot and site clearing. If the parcel fronts the Kettle or one of its creeks, ask Pine County about river and shoreland rules before clearing near the bank.

What We Clear In Sandstone
Pine is worth protecting when you clear here. Young white pine seeds in under popple and brush, and it is easy to wipe out with a careless machine. We watch for it. Tell us you want the pine saved and we will work around every one we can see, taking the hazel and popple that are crowding it. That kind of release work falls under brush and underbrush clearing. It leaves you a stand that gets better with time instead of one that has to start over.

Sandstone Questions
Does shallow rock around Sandstone stop a mulcher?
No. Flat ledge near the surface is actually easier than loose boulders, because the head can ride just above it. Soil is thin on that kind of ground, so we leave the mulch as cover and avoid spinning tracks. Roots stay in place and keep holding what dirt there is.
Can you save the young pine when you clear my land near Sandstone?
Yes, if we know that is the goal. Small pine hide in brush, so we go slower and look before each pass. Flagging the ones you care most about helps. We cannot promise to spot every seedling in a thicket, but selective work like this is what the machine is good at.
I own raw land in Pine County with no driveway. Can you still get in?
Often we can. If there is a legal access and the ground is passable, we mulch our own way in from the road and that becomes your trail. We do not build a driveway bed or bring in gravel. For a field approach or culvert, you would need the road authority and another contractor.
