Clearing Land Around Cook
Cook grew up on the Little Fork River, and the town was first named after it. Today it calls itself the Gateway to Lake Vermilion, and US Highway 53 and Highway 1 both run through town. The country around Cook is a mix you do not see in every part of St. Louis County. There are cleared farm fields from the homestead days, river bottoms, and wooded lake lots to the east. Land clearing in Cook covers all three. We do it by forestry mulching, grinding brush and small trees where they stand and leaving the mulch on the ground.
Old fields are a big part of the work out here. Many were hay or pasture once and have grown up in willow, alder and young aspen since. If the stems are still small, field reclamation brings the ground back without piling or burning. The mulch breaks down into the soil over the next seasons. Low fields near the river and its creeks stay wet into summer, so we often clear those after freeze up. Wetland rules can apply to some of that ground, and the county or the DNR is the place to ask.
What We Clear In Cook
Toward the lake, the jobs change. Cabin owners want brush cleared around buildings, a path to the water and room to park. Hunters want lanes, a plot opening and a quiet trail to the stand. Folks on bigger parcels between Cook and Angora want a trail loop for the side by side. We take those on with the same machine and the same approach: keep the trees you pick, take the tangle beneath them. Calvin walks the land before giving a free estimate, so the plan fits what you own.

Cook Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (218) 461-7376 and ask Calvin, or read the common questions.
Can you bring back an old hayfield near Cook?
Usually, if the growth is still brush and young trees. We mulch the field back to open ground and leave the chips to break down. You may need to work the soil before seeding. Fields with big trees across them take more time, which Calvin will point out on the walk.
My land near the Little Fork River floods in spring. When can you clear it?
Wet river ground is usually cleared in late summer or after it freezes hard. Tracks spread the weight, but saturated soil still ruts. Some low ground may count as wetland, so check with St. Louis County or the DNR before we plan the work.
Do you work on cabin lots on the Cook side of Lake Vermilion?
Yes. We clear brush around cabins, cut paths to the shore and open parking areas. Work close to the water falls under shoreland rules, so start with the county. We keep shoreline clearing light and selective.
How far out from Cook will you travel for a job?
We work across St. Louis, Lake, Carlton, Pine, Aitkin and Itasca counties. Land around Cook, Orr, Angora and Tower is well within that. Call or text and tell us where the property is.
