Clearing Land Around Mountain Iron
Mountain Iron calls itself the Taconite Capital of the World, and the Minntac mine sits right beside town. But the city limits take in far more than the mine. Mountain Iron spreads across dozens of square miles of the Mesabi Range, with homes, hobby farms and wooded lots strung along US Highway 169 and the county roads. That is where land clearing in Mountain Iron comes in. Owners have acreage they cannot walk, let alone use. We grind the brush and small trees in place with forestry mulching, so there is no pile left to burn.
Range ground has its own habits. Old disturbed land fills in fast with aspen, willow and alder. Rock and gravel sit close to the surface in spots, and low areas between ridges hold water. A mulching head works on top of the soil, so it does not dig into rock the way a blade does. On wet pockets we watch the weather and often wait for frost. Winter is a good time to clear on the Iron Range, and the machine runs all year. Read why in our guide to winter land clearing.
What We Clear In Mountain Iron
Most calls from this part of St. Louis County are about using land people already own. A family wants ATV trails through the back forty. A hunter wants lanes and a small opening for a plot. Someone wants the line between two parcels cleared so a fence can go up. Our trail and access clearing and hunting land work cover most of it. The Mesabi Trail has an access point in Mountain Iron, so riding and walking are part of life here. Calvin walks the land first and gives a free estimate.
- ATV trails through wooded acreage
- Aspen and willow on old open ground
- Shooting lanes and stand access
- Property lines before a new fence
- Building sites along the county roads

Mountain Iron Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (218) 461-7376 and ask Calvin, or read the common questions.
Can you clear rocky ground in Mountain Iron?
Often, yes. The mulching head grinds wood above the soil, so it does not need to dig through gravel or ledge. Rock right at the surface does wear the teeth and limits how low we can cut. Calvin checks for that on the walk and tells you what to expect.
How do I know where my Mountain Iron property ends?
Look for survey pins or a recent survey. Iron Range parcels can border company, county or state land, and the lines are not always obvious in thick brush. We clear to marked lines only. If the pins are missing, a land surveyor can set them before we start.
Is winter a good time for clearing on the Iron Range?
For a lot of sites it is the right time. Frozen ground carries the machine over wet spots without rutting, and brush is easier to see once the leaves are down. We cut trails and lanes in the snow. Call in fall if you want a winter date.
Can you open a food plot on my land near Mountain Iron?
Yes. We mulch the brush and young trees off the opening and leave the edge trees for cover. You will still need to work the soil and plant. Our hunting land clearing page explains how plots, lanes and stand trails fit together.
